Jharsuguda cops bust interstate dicky theft gang, arrest three

Jharsuguda: In a major breakthrough against interstate property crime, Jharsuguda police busted an alleged interstate motorcycle dicky theft gang, arrested three accused belonged from Tamil Nadu and recovered the entire stolen amount of Rs.1 lakh within 12 hours of the offence.

Police identified the accused as B. Jeevarathinam (35), C. Babu (44) and P. Zacraiya (45), all residents of Rajamangalam in Villivakkam area of Chennai district in Tamil Nadu. Police suspect the trio are members of an interstate theft gang and are verifying their possible involvement in similar offences committed in Odisha and other states.

Police said the theft took place on Sunday after the complainant withdrew Rs.1 lakh from an HDFC Bank branch and parked his motorcycle near Swadist Hotel at Sunarimunda. The cash was allegedly stolen from the motorcycle’s dicky, following which a case was registered at Jharsuguda Town police station as under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Following the incident, Jharsuguda Superintendent of Police G.R. Raghavendra personally reviewed the investigation and constituted multiple teams under the supervision of the inspector-in-charge of Jharsuguda Town police station. The teams analysed CCTV footage, carried out technical surveillance, gathered intelligence, verified interstate criminal movements and conducted extensive field enquiries.

Jharsuguda SP GR Raghavendra said, “Based on scientific evidence, CCTV analysis and technical inputs, police identified and tracked down the accused before arresting them in Jharsuguda. The entire stolen cash was recovered along with several incriminating articles. The seized articles include Rs.1 lakh in cash, two motorcycles, two iron T-shaped tools allegedly used to commit the theft, two mobile phones, two backpacks containing the clothes worn during the offence and other incriminating materials.”

He further added, “ Investigation is underway to ascertain the gang’s interstate crime network and involvement in other theft cases.”
