One Dies, while 5 falls ill after Gas Leak in Orissa Metaliks Plant
Jharsuguda : In a tragic incident, a 36-year-old contractual worker died while 5 got seriously ill after CO (Carbon Monoxide) gas leaked at Orissa Metaliks Pvt. Ltd. Plant situated at Budhipatar area in Jharsuguda District on Tuesday afternoon.
Police identified the deceased as Barun Pradhan, a resident of Kechobahal of Brajrajnagar in Jharsuguda District.
Jharsuguda SDPO Uma Shankar Singh said, �A 36-year-old contractual worker died after a gas leak, while 5 fell ill after inhaling the gas. They were rushed to a Pvt. Hospital where they were under treatment. however, as per the doctor, presently they are out of danger.�
Jharsuguda Assistant Director, Factory and Boiler, Archana Dash, said, � The incident took place at 11:00 am, when Carbon Monoxide (CO) gas got leaked from a valve which was under maintenance and was not checked, soon the Carbon Monoxide (CO) �gas had entered into an MCC (Motor Control Center), which was an Airconditioned room, in which these six workers had gone to take rest after the gas entered inside the air-conditioned room, the workers inhaled the gas and one person died while other five workers managed to escape but were seriously ill after inhaling the gas. they were immediately shifted to Pvt. Nursing Home for treatment, The five people were Out of danger as per the doctor. We called experts from the nearest TRL Krosaki and JSW BPSL to check the exact location of the leak. Then the leak was identified and was closed.
We have closed down the Blast Furnace from where the Carbon Monoxide (CO) Gas used to be produced until compliance is met. An expert gas management system must be present to tackle in such�situation. Till Now also one team from JSW BPSL has been stationed for observation at the place of leakage.�
A�company spokesperson confirmed the mishap. “The details will be known after inquiry,” he said.
