Detection of Burglary gang with the use of Artificial Intelligence by Jharsuguda Police
Jharsuguda : In a pioneering effort to leverage technology in law enforcement, the Jharsuguda Police have successfully apprehended a gang of burglars responsible for a series of thefts in the district, using cutting-edge tools like Artificial Intelligence (AI), face recognition, and geo-tagging of CCTV cameras. The operation, guided by the directives of the Odisha Director General of Police (DGP), showcases the growing role of futuristic technologies in modern crime detection and prevention.
Three separate burglary incidents occurred over a span of just a few days in Jharsuguda District, on November 2, 4, and 5, 2024. The crimes involved the theft of valuable gold and silver jewelry, mobile phones, and cash from residential properties in various parts of the district. Although CCTV cameras installed in the area captured footage of four suspects, they were wearing masks and had covered their faces, making identification a challenge.
Undeterred, the Jharsuguda Police utilized their advanced AI-driven Safe City CCTV system, which has the capability to analyze and process footage in real-time. With all cameras geo-tagged by their GPS locations, the police examined footage from the entry and exit points of the crime scenes. Leveraging AI’s search feature, they were able to trace the suspects based on the color of their clothing, even though their faces were obscured.
The system then provided additional crucial footage where the suspects’ faces were not covered, allowing investigators to use facial recognition and face detection features to identify the individuals. AI algorithms processed images of the suspects and cross-referenced them with data from previous records, eventually matching them to individuals previously seen in the area.
Further investigation using the live location monitoring feature of the CCTV system revealed that the suspects were traveling toward Keonjhar in a bus. Acting swiftly on this intelligence, a Jharsuguda police team coordinated with other units and intercepted the bus in Deogarh district. In a timely operation, the police apprehended all four suspects and recovered a significant portion of the stolen goods.
The stolen goods recovered from the accused included:
• Gold Jewelry: 5 gold chains, 1 pair of gold bangles, 3 pairs of gold earrings, 2 gold rings, 3 gold lockets, 2 gold “Chandras” (head ornaments), and several more gold pieces.
• Silver Items: 5 pairs of silver paunji, 17 silver chains, 12 pairs of silver bangles, and small pieces of broken silver.
• Cash and Phones: Rs. 8,560 in currency, Rs. 220 in coins, and 4 mobile phones (including models from ITEL, Nokia, and Jio).
