Jharsuguda: A lecturer at PKSS Graduate College in Katapali, Jharsuguda district, succumbed after 9 months of treatment resulting from an assault by a student.
Amit Barik was gravely wounded in the strike on February 22, 2023, after he apparently refused admission to a student who arrived late for class. The student, Dinesh Sahis, grew furious and assaulted Barik, leaving him with critical injuries.
Barik was initially attended to at a hospital in Jharsuguda but was subsequently transferred to VIMSAR Hospital in Burla due to the gravity of his wounds. He remained under treatment for nine months but succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Wednesday.
Following the incident, the police detained Sahis, who is currently undergoing trial. Barik’s demise has triggered anger and sorrow among the teaching community and students alike. Many have demanded harsher penalties for Sashis and other students who partake in violence against teachers.
