ECI Issues Formal Notification for Jharsuguda Bypoll, Nomination Filing Begins Today

Jharsuguda: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday issued a formal notification for the ensuing by-election to Jharsuguda assembly constituency scheduled on May 10. As per the notification issued by the ECI, the filing of nomination papers by the candidates will begin today (April 13) and the last date for the same is 20 April 2023.

Candidates can file their nomination papers to the Returning Officer or to Sunil Kumar Meher, Assistant Returning Officer at the office of the Returning Officer & Sub-Collector, Jharsuguda between 11 am and 3 pm on any day other then public holiday. While the scrutiny of nomination papers will be carried out on 21 April, candidates can withdraw their candidatures by 24 April.

The voting for the bypoll will be conducted on May 10 from 7 am to 6 pm while the counting of votes will be held on 13 May. The election shall be completed by 15 May 2023, the notification stated.

The by-election for the Jharsuguda assembly constituency has been necessitated due to the tragic assassination of the sitting MLA and Health Minister, Naba Kishore Das. As a result, the major political parties in the state have announced their respective candidates for the bypoll.

The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has nominated Dipali Das, the daughter of late Naba Kishore Das, as its candidate for the by-election. Dipali Das is expected to carry forward her father’s legacy and is likely to garner support from the BJD’s voter base in the constituency. The BJD, which is currently in power in the state of Odisha, will be keen on retaining the Jharsuguda assembly seat.

On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is the main opposition party in Odisha, has fielded Tankadhar Tripathy as its candidate for the bypoll. Tripathy is an experienced political leader and is expected to challenge the BJD’s candidate in a bid to win the Jharsuguda assembly seat for the BJP. The BJP will be aiming to expand its presence in the state and secure a win in the by-election.

The Congress has named Tarun Pandey as its candidate for the Jharsuguda bypoll. Pandey, who is a known face in the local political landscape, will be aiming to garner support from the traditional voter base of the Congress in the constituency and challenge the BJD and BJP candidates.

With the candidates from the BJD, BJP, and Congress in the fray, the by-election in Jharsuguda is expected to witness a keenly contested electoral battle. The outcome of the bypoll will not only have local ramifications but may also impact the larger political landscape in the state of Odisha. All eyes will be on the candidates and their campaigns as the election process progresses.
