Ash utilization gets a major boost at OPGC
IB Thermal : In what could be termed as a historical milestone, Odisha Power Generation Corporation Ltd. (OPGC) today started dispatching ash from Fly Ash Silo to Star Cement Plant, Assam, which shall be used for making PPC (Portland Pazzolana Cement). About 4000MT of fly ash was dispatched today from OPGC’s IB Thermal Power Station with the use of a railway rake. PPC cement is a form of blended cement that is cheap, requires less curing and thus has high demand in the market. Fly Ash is an important component of PPC constituting about 25% of the cement on a weight basis. The use of Fly Ash for cement production is a testimonial example of the phrase “Waste to Wealth”. Moreover, the replacement of cement as a binder in concrete with supplementary cementitious materials, such as fly ash (FA), will have lower environmental effects.
OPGC is one amongst very few power generators having state of art technology to dispose of ash through railway rake. OPGC has three Dry Fly Ash Silos with a capacity of 2300 MT each. With today’s landmark event, OPGC gains a significant potential to dispose of around 90000 MT of ash per month which can be further increased in months to come. It is to be noted that disposal of ash to cement industries will increase the ash utilization percentage of OPGC.
