Jharsuguda: In a swift and meticulously coordinated effort, the Jharsuguda Police have successfully solved a gruesome murder case involving the tragic death of an 18-year-old girl, reported missing on 7th December 2024.
The missing person’s report (MMR No. 116) was received on 7th December, prompting an immediate investigation. Through advanced technological tools, including the Artificial Intelligence (Al) feature of the Jharsuguda Smart City CCTV system, investigators tracked the girl’s movements. CCTV footage revealed that she was last seen with two individuals traveling on a two-wheeler.
Leveraging technical forensics and additional CCTV footage from surrounding areas, police identified Kunu Kisan, a resident of Lefripada PS under the Sundergarh Police District. Kisan was subsequently traced and taken into custody.
Upon intense interrogation, Kunu Kisan confessed to the chilling crime. He revealed that he had murdered the girl and dismembered her body in an attempt to conceal his crime. The murder occurred on the NH 143, along the Rourkela-Deogarh road under Lathikatha PS, Rourkela district. Kunu Kisan then disposed of the body in two separate locations: Tarkera Nali under Raghunathpalli PS and Balughat along the Brahmani River, also under Raghunathpalli PS.
In the early hours of 11th December, Jharsuguda Police, in collaboration with the DFSL team and ODRAF (Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force), conducted a search of the disposal sites. They recovered several body parts, clothing, and footwear from the locations, confirming the gruesome nature of the crime.
The motive behind the murder was revealed during the investigation. The victim had filed a rape case against Kunu Kisan in Sundergarh district (Dharuadihi PS Case No. 97/23). Kunu Kisan, who was arrested on 27th August 2023 and later granted bail on 4th December 2023, feared that the victim would testify against him in court. Believing his conviction was imminent, Kunu Kisan hatched a plan to eliminate the victim and prevent her from giving a statement. Despite earlier attempts to convince her to change her testimony, the victim refused, leading Kunu Kisan to carry out the horrific crime.
To avoid detection, Kunu Kisan took several precautions during the act. He altered the number plate and stickers on his bike, wore a helmet throughout the journey, and planned the execution of the crime meticulously.
All recovered body parts, clothes, footwear, and the weapon used in the crime have been seized in the presence of the DFSL team. The family of the victim has identified her based on the recovered items, including clothing, footwear, and jewelry. A DNA test will be conducted to further confirm the identity of the deceased.
The prime accused, Kunu Kisan, along with one of his accomplices, has been arrested. Jharsuguda Police are committed to bringing the case to a swift conclusion. A chargesheet will be submitted without delay, and the authorities are determined to ensure a speedy trial to bring justice to the victim and her grieving family.
