Pradip Purohit Calls for Recognition of Sambalpuri/Kosali Language in the Eighth Schedule
Jharsuguda: BJP leader and former MLA Pradip Purohit has urged the Honorable Home Minister to address the long-standing demand for the inclusion of the Sambalpuri/Kosali language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. Highlighting its significance, Purohit emphasized the language’s historical and cultural richness, along with its widespread use by nearly two crore people across 11 districts of Odisha.
In a statement, Purohit pointed out that Sambalpuri/Kosali is deeply rooted in the traditions of Western Odisha and boasts an extensive literary heritage. Notable works such as translations of the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavad Gita in Sambalpuri/Kosali underscore the language’s depth. The region’s vibrant folk arts, including Danda, Prabhati, Nachnia, Prithakumar, and Mitranmala, also form an integral part of this linguistic culture.
Purohit also acknowledged the contributions of luminaries such as poet Gangadhar Meher, playwright Gopal Chhotray, and the renowned singer Jitendra Haripal, who have elevated the cultural identity of Sambalpuri/Kosali.
“This language is not just a means of communication but a symbol of the pride and identity of the people of Western Odisha. It deserves recognition at the national level,” Purohit stated.
He recalled that on March 1, 2014, the then Chief Minister of Odisha had formally requested the Central Government to include Sambalpuri/Kosali in the Eighth Schedule. However, he expressed disappointment over the lack of follow-up efforts by subsequent state governments to realize this demand.
Purohit urged the Central Government to take immediate action to grant official recognition to Sambalpuri/Kosali as a state language and include it in the Eighth Schedule. He emphasized that such recognition would honor the aspirations of the people of Western Odisha and preserve their linguistic heritage for future generations.
