Jharsuguda : In a significant development for aviation in Western Odisha, Veer Surendra Sai (VSS) Airport in Jharsuguda has completed the construction of four additional bays for handling Airbus 320-type aircraft, these new bays are set to become operational by July, informed Jharsuguda Airport Director Sandeep Kumar Tiwari
“We have already received all necessary approvals from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) for the four additional bays for handling Airbus 320 type aircraft and by July it will be operational. Now Veer Surendra Sai Airport will have six bays in total, which will help in handling more numbers of flights. Similarly, even the airport capacity is also going to be enhanced, in this regard, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has taken steps for modernizing and enhancing the capacity of 50 Airports in India among which VSS Airport, Jharsuguda is one among them. Presently, Veer Surendra Sai Airports handles around 270 passengers in peak hours, however, now the capacity will be enhanced to 540 passengers, for which the work has been started since March and presently the work is in progress. We are hopeful that work will be complete by the next 3 to 4 Months. Subsequently, After the increase of Bays, we can expect new additional flights in the Winter Schedule. The Future of this Airport is very bright and this is the only Airport in the entire Western Odisha, whose catchment area is more than 300 Kilometers.”
“Additionally, in the recent General Election, Veer Surendra Sai Airport also played a vital role, when it handled a maximum number of non-scheduled flights in which VIPs and VVIPs, Star Campaigners of the political parties had arrived at VSS airport. A total 88 flights of non-scheduled flights were handled between April 16th to 29th May 2024.” He added
Presently, Indigo Airlines has been providing flight service for Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata While Alliance Air is providing flight service for Bhubaneswar.
