Scientific Session on Diabetic Retinopathy and Blindness Held in Jharsuguda

Jharsuguda : A significant scientific session on the importance of diabetes-related retinopathy and blindness was held at Hotel Bishnu Palace, Jharsuguda. This event was jointly organized by Trilochan Netralaya, Jharsuguda, and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Jharsuguda.

Dr. Shiva Prasad Sahoo, Founder Director of Trilochan Netralaya, and Dr. Chitaranjan Mishra, Head of the Vitreo-Retina Department at Trilochan Netralaya, emphasized the crucial role of early detection in preventing blindness caused by diabetic retinopathy. Their presentations highlighted the asymptomatic nature of the disease in its initial stages, which often leads to delayed consultations with ophthalmologists by patients.

Dr. Radha Krishna Joshi, IMA President, and Dr. Shankar Jaya Kishan Patel, IMA Secretary of Jharsuguda, underscored the importance of a collaborative management approach involving both ophthalmologists and physicians to tackle blindness related to diabetic retinopathy effectively.

During the session, fundus photography using a handheld nonmydriatic offline AI-integrated fundus camera was conducted for all attendees. This innovative approach aids in the early detection and monitoring of diabetic retinopathy.

The experts stressed that all individuals with diabetes, regardless of whether they have eye problems, should have their retina checked every six months. Regular retina examinations can significantly help in the prevention of blindness related to diabetic retinopathy.

The session concluded with a strong message to the diabetic community to prioritize regular eye check-ups as part of their healthcare routine to avoid the severe consequences of diabetic retinopathy.
