Jharsuguda MLA Tankadhar Tripathy Demanded Construction of a Barrage on the IB River

Jharsuguda, 5th December: To ensure the supply of drinking water and irrigation, Jharsuguda MLA has raised a demand in the State Legislative Assembly for the construction of a barrage. Due to the construction of multiple barrages by the Chhattisgarh government over the main Mahanadi and its tributaries upstream, the water level in the Hirakud reservoir has been declining. As a result, the people of Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Bargarh districts are facing difficulties in accessing drinking water and irrigation for agriculture. To address this issue, the MLA has made a request in the Legislative Assembly.

The MLA has suggested that if a barrage is constructed near Deogaon, close to the Ib River in Jharsuguda, people in both Jharsuguda and Kuchinda (Sambalpur district) would benefit from a steady supply of drinking water and irrigation.

Since Independence, the river embankment project in Sundargarh district, particularly near Katakidiha, has been stalled by the previous government. The MLA proposes that constructing a river embankment project near Telijore will benefit the people of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur. Similarly, the construction of a barrage on the Anganadi river would particularly benefit farmers in the Balangir and Bargarh districts, especially in the Padmapur area.
