Music Maestro Ustad Rashid Khan succumbs to cancer at 55

Kolkata: The music world mourns the untimely demise of Ustad Rashid Khan, one of the greatest vocalists of his generation, who passed away today at the age of 55 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Ustad Rashid Khan had been battling prostate cancer for some time, undergoing treatment at a Kolkata hospital. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, he succumbed to the disease around 3.45 p.m. His death has left a void in the Indian classical music scene and has shocked the nation.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences, stating that Ustad Rashid Khan’s passing is an irreparable loss to the entire country and the global music community. She paid tribute to his immense talent and the indelible mark he has left on the world of music.

Ustad Rashid Khan’s health condition had reportedly deteriorated after he suffered a brain attack last month. He initially received treatment at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital but later chose to continue his treatment in Kolkata. Although his health had improved briefly, it took a turn for the worse in recent days.

Renowned for his mastery of classical music, particularly the Khayal genre, Ustad Rashid Khan captivated audiences with his soulful renditions and exceptional vocal range. His contributions to Indian music were recognised with numerous prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri, Banga Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and Padma Bhushan Award.

Ustad Rashid Khan’s versatility extended beyond classical music, as he lent his voice to several Bollywood films. He is fondly remembered for his moving rendition of “Aaoge Jab Tum” in the hit movie “Jab We Met,” which became a chart-topping success. He also lent his vocal prowess to films like “My Name Is Khan,” “Raaz,” “Manto,” and “Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana.”

Ustad Rashid Khan’s demise is a profound loss for the Indian music fraternity. His passing leaves a legacy of timeless melodies, inspiring generations of musicians and music lovers alike. His contribution to the world of music will continue to resonate for years to come.
