Jharsuguda : A five-month-old elephant calf died after falling into a trench near Bagdehi Forest Range on the wee hours of Friday. The calf was found caught up inside the mud of trench near Bagdehi.
The animal died after falling into a trench which was dug up for laying of cables in Telidihi Village, near Bagedihi
It is suspected that the baby elephant might have fallen into the trench accidentally when it came along with a herd on Thursday night to graze crops. Since the trench was very deep and full of water, the elephant could not climb up and died.
“After receiving the information we have rushed the spot and had sent the dead body of elephant calf for post mortem. It seems that the herd in which this elephant was moving had tried to take the calf out but failing they had gone leaving the calf. After Post mortem a report will be submitted to DFO.” Said Jharsuguda Assistant Conservator of Forest P.K. Dhal
